Root Canals

Sharp, throbbing tooth pain feels worse at night, but distracts you during the day. You want relief, and you want to keep your natural tooth. A root canal can do that. If you are looking for a step-by-step treatment plan with a dentist in Roodepoort, Gumz and More can help you move from pain to a clear next step.

What is a root canal?

A root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) removes infected tissue inside the tooth and seals the roots. The outside of your tooth stays so that you can chew with it again. The goal is simple: stop the infection, ease the pain, and save the tooth you already have.

When might I need a root canal?

Tooth nerve irritation often shows up as deep, lingering pain. Hot drinks hurt, or biting feels sharp. Sometimes there is swelling or a small pimple on the gum near the tooth. X-rays and testing help confirm the diagnosis so that you can choose the right option.

Common signs to watch for:

  • A toothache that wakes you up at night or lingers after hot or cold drinks
  • Tender areas when you bite down or even when you tap the tooth
  • Swelling of the gum or part of the face near one tooth
  • A tooth that has darkened after an injury
  • A crack, a deep cavity, or an old filling that is not working well anymore

What happens during treatment?

  1. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic.
  2. A small opening is made to access the inside of the tooth.
  3. Fine instruments are used to clean and shape the root canals.
  4. The canals are thoroughly disinfected.
  5. The space is sealed to help prevent bacteria from returning.
  6. A protective crown is often recommended afterwards to reduce the risk of future cracks.

A typical plan may include the following:

  • Local anaesthetic for comfort
  • Careful cleaning and shaping of the canals
  • Disinfection and sealing the roots
  • A temporary or permanent filling on top of the tooth
  • A crown appointment–if advised

How should I prepare for a root canal?

A few simple steps make the day feel a bit smoother:

  • If you need to eat, have a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment
  • Carry on taking regular medications unless advised otherwise
  • Bring a list of allergies and medical conditions
  • Tell us if you clench, grind, or use a nightguard
  • Arrange a time for a follow-up if a crown is planned

What about aftercare?

Mild tenderness for a few days is common and manageable.

Here are some helpful tips to aid your aftercare:

  • Chew on the other side until the final restoration is placed
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief as advised
  • Brush and floss as usual, being gentle around the tooth
  • Call if pain worsens after two to three days, or if the swelling appears

How long does a root canal last?

With a good seal and a strong top restoration, root canal treatment can last for many years. Regular check-ups allow minor issues to be found early. Protecting the tooth with a crown is recommended for back teeth, where bite forces are higher.

Is a root canal always the answer?

Sometimes the tooth is too damaged or fractured to repair. In that case, removal and replacement options are discussed early. You will know the pros and cons, costs, and timing, so you can choose what suits your mouth and goals.
